Credit Card Bank Transfer Experience
Expanding OCA’s credit-to-account transfer feature to enable interbank transactions, seamlessly bridging credit card limits with digital account onboarding.
About
At OCA (Itaú Uruguay), credit card holders could transfer part of their available credit limit as cash into digital accounts. However, this feature was restricted exclusively to internal OCA account holders, severely limiting product adoption and customer utility.
The challenge was to expand this capability to allow transfers to any external bank in Uruguay, while managing complex business requirements and multi-product user states.
Multi-Flow Architecture
To enable interbank transfers, we had to design and map out distinct end-to-end user journeys based on account status:
Existing Account Holders (OCA Blue): A streamlined, direct interbank transfer flow.
Credit Card-Only Customers: A contextual onboarding bridge that allowed users to open an OCA Blue account directly within the transfer journey to complete their transaction.
I mapped out every variable, including recipient bank validation steps, input requirements, and onboarding friction points, ensuring a cohesive user experience across all entry points.
Onboarding Integration
Rather than forcing users out of the transfer process to set up an account, we embedded a lightweight "One-Click Account Opening" flow directly into the transfer funnel.
Clear progressive disclosure and transparent status updates ensured users understood why account creation was necessary, turning a potential blocker into a seamless account acquisition opportunity.
Edge Cases & Alignment
Interbank transfers involve multiple failure points—from invalid account details to bank timeout responses. I thoroughly mapped out error states, search behaviors, and confirmation screens to ensure clarity at every step.
Leading continuous design critiques with cross-functional stakeholders, engineering teams, and compliance officers ensured that all banking regulations and technical constraints were addressed without sacrificing usability.
